Dittany (Dictamnus albus, also known as the “Burning Bush,” “Moses’ Bush,” or “Pipe Cleaner”) is a plant traditionally valued for its medicinal properties, particularly in the herbal medicine of St. Hildegard of Bingen.

Main Properties and Traditional Uses

  • Circulatory System and Heart: Traditionally believed to support healthy blood circulation, including circulation in the brain and extremities. It has also been used to help combat atherosclerosis and reduce cholesterol, triglyceride, and homocysteine levels.
  • Digestive System: Stimulates the secretion of gastric juices and bile, supports digestion, helps relieve abdominal spasms, and reduces bloating.
  • Diuretic and Detoxifying Properties: Traditionally used to support kidney function, promote the elimination of excess fluids from the body, and assist with kidney stones and gallstones.
  • Nervous System and Relaxation: Contains coumarins, which are traditionally associated with calming effects, helping to relieve nervous tension and promote restful sleep.
  • Reproductive System: Traditionally used to support menstrual regularity and address irregular or absent menstrual periods.

Important Contraindications and Precautions

  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Dittany must not be used during pregnancy, as it may stimulate uterine contractions and increase the risk of miscarriage. It should also be avoided while breastfeeding.
  • Children: Dittany should not be administered to children under 7 years of age.
  • Photosensitivity (Increased Sensitivity to Sunlight): The plant contains furanocoumarins, including bergapten, which can cause severe skin reactions when exposed to sunlight. Contact with the fresh plant followed by sun exposure may result in painful burns, irritation, blistering, and long-lasting pigmentation changes. Sun exposure and tanning beds should be avoided when using dittany.
