Main Properties and Health Benefits

  • Digestive System: Supports healthy digestion, enhances the absorption of nutrients (vitamins and minerals), and helps cleanse the intestines.
  • Nervous System and Brain: Traditionally believed to support memory, concentration, and learning abilities. According to St. Hildegard, Bertram helps “clear the mind” and improve blood circulation.
  • Immune System and Vitality: Traditionally used to support immune function, strengthen the body’s natural defenses, and help prevent nutritional deficiencies.
  • Anti-inflammatory and Antioxidant Properties: Contains compounds with antioxidant potential and has traditionally been used to help reduce inflammation and support the body’s natural cleansing processes.
  • Respiratory System: Traditionally used to help clear mucus from the throat and nasal passages and support healthy mucous membranes.
  • Libido and Vitality: Traditionally regarded as an aphrodisiac that supports male libido and healthy circulation. It has also been used to help restore strength and vitality during recovery from illness.

Usage:

Bertram is most commonly available as ground root, which can be sprinkled directly onto food, including sandwiches, soups, sauces, and meat dishes.

It can be used as an alternative to ordinary black pepper, following the traditional dietary practices of St. Hildegard of Bingen. A few pinches daily, added to meals as a seasoning.
